The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine whether the implementation of the Japanese professional development model called lesson study would help to increase teacher collaboration time. The problem has been the gap between our school's school improvement plan (SIP) goals of providing professional development time to allow teachers to collaborate and the actual time teachers spend in collaboration. This is important to the teachers because collaboration will help them reach their goal of making adequate yearly progress (AYP). Lesson study has been founded on the theoretical principle of constructivism and backed by research from the TIMSS study, Lewis (2002), Richardson (2004), and Stigler and Heibert (1999). Data were collected on the implementation of research-based strategies into the lesson study format and on the teachers' attitudes and beliefs regarding the lesson study model as an instructional strategy to improve their teaching practice. In this research study, 8 teachers formed 2 different study teams, and 1 knowledgeable other served on both teams. These participants were observed, audio-taped, and interviewed. The collected data were read, reviewed, and divided into 6 categories and 17 sub-themes using an open and axial coding process. Major findings were: (a) lesson study is a viable vehicle for adding research-based strategies to lesson plans; (b) lesson study was one of the most profound models of professional development that they had ever engaged in; and (c) participants felt that the observation part of the lesson study cycle provided the modeling and feedback necessary to end teacher isolation. The potential for a paradigm shift from a top-down to a teacher-directed model of professional development will enact positive social change in the way educators and administrators view teacher collaboration.The principal may say this is where we are going a€œI want everyone to focus on a a€œ Do Nowa€ or a a€œVenn Diagrama€. ...
